David Newton, Westmont Professor of Entrepreneurial Finance, has been named to the board of directors of a prestigious national educational organization. Newton formally joins the Board of Directors for The Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge at its semi-annual meeting Sept. 25-27 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
“My appointment is specifically focused on developing two very innovative national entrepreneurship education initiatives for the more than 3,000 high schools and 1,000 colleges, universities and junior colleges in the Foundation's member-network, to promote free enterprise and entrepreneurship with the existing programs in American history and values,” Newton says.
The foundation, which honors patriotism and good citizenship, was established after World War II by three prominent business leaders: Kenneth Wells, Don Belding and E.F. Hutton. It is dedicated to helping students, teachers and citizens gain a greater awareness and appreciation of the principles of a free and democratic society.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower served as board chairman for 14 years, from the foundation’s founding in 1949 until 1963. The board, which is comprised of 17 individuals from around the country, is responsible for the foundation’s operations, finances, national education programs, policy and strategy, and development.
Last year, the foundation honored Newton with their prestigious Leavey National Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. Newton directs the Spirit of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (S.E.E.D.) National Collegiate Venture Forum, which he launched in October 2003. He graduated from Kings College in New York, earned an MBA in finance at The Sawyer Business School at Suffolk University in Boston, and a doctorate in entrepreneurial finance at The Graduate School of Business at United States International University in San Diego. He has been teaching at Westmont since 1990.
