Talk to Probe Christian Zionism, End Times
By
Westmont
Bruce Fisk, Westmont professor of religious studies, traces the rise of Christian Zionism in a lecture, “STILL ChRistiAn ZIonism AFTER ALL THESE YEARS: The Third Temple in a Century of End-Times Hermeneutics,” Monday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. in Founders Dining Room. The Paul C. Wilt Phi Kappa Phi fall semester lecture is free and open to the public.
Fisk says he will identify Christian Zionism’s core convictions, focusing on a key question: does Scripture foresee an eschatological Third Temple?
“The evidence is far from clear,” Fisk says. “Interpreters of Scripture should exercise caution and humility, not least because the Temple Mount is a major flash point in the present conflict.”
Respondents to Fisk’s talk are Tremper Longman, Westmont religious studies professor, and Tom Knecht, Westmont assistant professor of political science.
Fisk co-led Westmont’s Middle East Mayterm course in 2004, 2007 and 2009, and will lead a Middle East semester in 2011.
He has authored several books, including “First Corinthians” (Interpretation Bible Studies), and his next book, “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Jesus,” is due out in the spring.
Fisk earned his doctorate in New Testament at Duke University and joined the Westmont faculty 11 years ago. He has also taught at Fuller Theological Seminary, Briercrest College and Seminary, Duke Divinity School and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
