Talk to Probe the Possibility of Peace
By
Westmont
Paul Chappell, a West Point graduate and former army captain, speaks about “Will War Ever End?” Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m. in Westmont’s Founders Dining Room. The free, public lecture, which is sponsored by Westmont Intercultural Programs, explores the possibility of achieving peace.
“Like most Americans, I grew up thinking that peace was a naive dream,” Chappell says. “But I learned at West Point and in the military that peace is possible if we begin taking steps toward achieving it.”
In his talk Chappell will explain what waging peace means and how, in the nuclear age, waging peace is required to protect the planet and ensure the survival of humanity.
“We all can create positive change in the world, and now is the best time to begin,” he says.
Chappell, who served in the army for seven years, was deployed to Baghdad and left active duty in November 2009 as a captain. He has written “Will War Ever End? A Soldier’s Vision of Peace for the 21st Century,” “The End of War: How Waging Peace Can Save Humanity, Our Planet, and Our Future” and is working on his third book, “Peaceful Revolution.”
Chappell, a Santa Barbara resident, serves as the peace leadership director for the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (www.wagingpeace.org).
