Top Scholars to Compete for Full Tuition
By
Westmont
Thirty students compete for four full-tuition scholarships at Westmont during the two-day ninth annual Monroe Scholarship Competition Feb. 5-6. The Monroe Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship offered to a few exceptionally high-achieving first-year students each year. It is the highest academic honor an incoming student may receive at Westmont.
The candidates take part in several classes and a colloquy about the liberal arts with moderator Warren Rogers, professor of physics; Lisa DeBoer, professor or art; Russ Howell, professor of mathematics; Jane Higa, vice president for student life; and Tom Fikes, professor of psychology.
As part of the ninth annual competition, students write a timed response to an essay question as well as interview with two faculty members or administrators. Monroe recipients are selected for their exceptional academic abilities, strong values, character and a desire to grow in their Christian faith.
The four Monroe Scholars for 2009 had an academic profile that included an average honors GPA of 4.41 and an average SAT (critical reading and math) score of 1550.
